Prepping For a Long Ride

Whether training for a triathlon or just a long ride, keeping safety at the forefront of your cycling can help you to avoid serious injury. Next time you go to get on your bike, keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Check the Working Condition of Your Bike – Before going on any long bike ride, you want to ensure that all of the safety features in play are working correctly. This means checking the brakes and making sure the gears are shifting properly.
  • Be Sure Your Bike Fits YOU Well – This includes making sure that the bike seat is at a good height. Selecting a bike that is the right fit and adjusted correctly for you, can prevent misuse or overuse of various parts of the body.
  • Always Wear a Helmet – Helmets are extremely important in protecting a rider from serious injury. Not only from an accident with a car but also from a single-person accident such as hitting a wet patch, causing you to lose control of your bike.
  • Join a Riding Group – Since you will be sharing the road with automotive vehicles, it’s a good idea to join a riding group in the beginning so that you can get comfortable on your bike before going it alone. There’s safety in numbers.

Anytime you get on your bike – especially for longer rides – you must follow the rules of the road in order to prevent an accident which could result in serious injury. By checking and adjusting the bike itself regularly, to riding with groups of people for practice, you can keep yourself – and others – safe on the road.
